6 Ways to Master Your Next Performance Review - The Muse

6 Ways to Master Your Next Performance Review - The Muse6 Ways to Master Your Next Performance ReviewEven if youre a stellar employee, performance reviews can be a surprisingly draining process. Whether youre sitting across from your manager panicking about all those times you came in a little (or a lot) after 9 AM or filling out a self appraisal form, going over everything youve done in the past year and then topping it off with goals for the next is all just a bit overwhelming. But turns out, there are a couple things you can do throughout the year to make this process a whole lot less stressful. Starting today, add these simple tips to your daily routine, and youll be totally prepared for a fantastic meeting. 1. Track Your Job ResponsibilitiesLook over your job description and create a spreadsheet of all your current responsibilities. platzset aside time once a week (or month) to fill in each time you go above and beyond under the appropriate responsibility. Dont be picky. For exa mple, if you went out of your way to meet with one additional stakeholder for a particular project, write it down. Its hard to know what examples will prove most useful come review time. 2. Pay Attention to the ExtrasOf course, its just as important to track the accomplishments that dont fall within your job description. Whether you add an extra column in your spreadsheet or create a separate list, write down those extra things you do that make the office run more smoothly. Did you help out with a search committee for a new position? Lead the charge on your departments volunteer day? These contributions definitely impact the office, but might be easy for you to forget, especially if theyre just second nature to you. Either record them separately or be fastidious about putting them in your calendar to keep some sort of record. If youre notlage sure how to approach tracking your accomplishments, try out this handy worksheet.3. Create a Brag FolderIf lists and calendars arent your thin g, one super simple way to keep track of things youve done well is to create a brag folder in your inbox. Anytime you get a note complimenting you on a job well done or a thank you note from a grateful client, pop it in that folder- and when review time comes, itll be easy to comb through the accolades and find the best ones.Set Goals for Next YearAnother common component of performance reviews is coming up with your professional goals for next year. Aside from making sure your goals are SMART (specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound), you can prioritize by making sure to...4. Track Those Want-to-DosYou know those projects you want to tackle, but never have time to? It might be streamlining a particularly annoying process or reaching out more regularly to your less pushy clients. If you take an extra second to write them down every time one occurs to you, youll have a list of appropriate and useful goals to choose from when the time comes for you to think about ob jectives for next year. 5. Look Toward the FutureThink ahead to the future roles or responsibilities youre interested in. Try former Muse editor Erin Greenawalds career management strategy of checking out other jobs throughout the year (even if you love the one you have) just to see whats out there that might interest you and what the necessary skill sets are. Once you get a sense of what positions pique your interest and what qualifications you want to beef up, you can abflug to set your goals for next year. For example, if most of the positions youre interested in require management experience, one of your goals might be to supervise the summer intern.6. Tackle Your Blind SpotsTo successfully propel your career forward, you also want to make sure nothing is holding you back. Keeping track of areas that challenged you this year (maybe in that spreadsheet youre going to create with job responsibilities) can help you set goals that address a professional weakness or a gap in your kno wledge- before they become a problem when youre being evaluated for a promotion. These goals can be more professional development oriented- such as learning a new technology or gaining experience public speaking- or focused on soft skills, like getting better at delegation. Just make sure to connect your own development back to how it benefits the office. Armed with a list of accomplishments and a strategy for creating new goals for the upcoming year, youll be totally ready for performance review season. Good luck

How to Become a Designer at Any Stage of Your Career

How to Become a Designer at Any Stage of Your CareerHow to Become a Designer at Any Stage of Your CareerThinking about a career in design, but bedrngnis sure where to stspecies? As a self-taught designer, I came later to the game than most, and I did my fair share of exploring before landing on design research. The good news is, no matter what stage of your career youre in or how far afield your background may seem, if its something you aspire to, its entirely possible to find your niche in the design world. Heres my quick cheat sheet on platzsetting yourself on the path to calling yourself a designer. 1. Understand the Designer LandscapeNewsflash Design isnt just about how a thing looks. Your first step as you forge down the path toward a career in design is to understand the kinds of roles out there and decide what kind of designer you want to be. UI, UX, visual, interaction, motion, research Which do you want to pursue? If those titles put you in a tizzy, its time to understand th em. Theres no one-size-fits-all primer, but you can start here to get a taste of the differences. If youve done your research and still arent entirely sure which role will best suit you, fret not Ignore the job title for a minute and focus on the design challenges that are most intriguing to you. Your focus will naturally narrow itself toward answering questions specific to one of those roles. For example, if your biggest questions are about why people use a thing, or how, a research role might be for you.If youre still not finding an obvious fit, know that the lines among these roles are changing every day, so go for the design challenges you enjoy and see where you land from there.2. Make, Make, Make Practice Makes PerfectIt used to be that there was no go-to spot for design learning. When I first started digging into design work, there wasnt a strong centralized place for learning about it I spent a lot of time- too much- culling and curating resources. Lucky for you, years later and this has changed You dont have to build your own curriculum anymore, because there are plenty of great ones already out thereHere are the top teach-yourself-to-design resources to dive intoDesign Tuts+ This is the Holy Grail of practical design lessons, covering everything from graphic design to Photoshop to web design to drawing theory. Gibbon Gibbon has a wealth of playlists for learning. Read up on storytelling and copywriting (yes, those are design skills, too), or create and share your own set of resources as you go on your own design-learning journey.Hello Designer Remember when I said Id spent too much time curating resources for learning design when I first started out? Enter Hello Designer, the fruit of my labor. I did the hard part of putting those resources together, so now you dont have to. (Youre welcome.)3. Think Like a DesignerThinking like a designer doesnt happen overnight or through a single tutorial. Understanding mental models, recognizing core interaction fl ows and design patterns these are skills that are built up over time. So, start now The more you know and can talk about design, the more you build up an archive and a repertoire of knowledge to work through, return to, learn from, and iterate on. How do you learn how to think like a designer? Scour websites like pttrns and lovely ui and start keeping track of what you like and dont like. What details are you noticing and why? Then start unpacking why you have those preferences. If it sounds intimidating, it shouldnt- its likely you already have an instinct for a particular aesthetic if youre interested in pursuing a career in design. You probably have a sense of what makes a thing well-designed or why certain designs work- you just have to learn to tap into that.Cant pin it down? Try this next step. 4. Talk to Other DesignersYou will learn things you didnt know you didnt know by talking to other designers. So find people in your network in the field, or reach out to designers at co mpanies you admire, and see if you can pick their brains. Ask them why they think something is good or bad or great. Notice the details they notice and understand why. Learn what they look for and where.Understanding their thinking patterns (and yours) can help you improve your own skill, collaborate with others, and gain insight on the decisions distinguishing competing products in the design world. Talking to designers is also a great way of building your vocabulary and beginning to formulate how to defend your (or someone elses) work. Articulating why a design works or how it fails is a skill not everyone has Talking to people who live it day to day will help you exercise that muscle and stretch in the right direction. Think of it as catching up on all the design critiques you missed by not going to art school. 5. Take a Class (in Person)Dont have a bunch of designer friends you can start bugging? You can also take a class. There are many reasons taking a class in person will giv e you a boost and lots of local courses to choose from. For in-person classes, aim for subjects that are harder to learn and improve upon on your own. Its easier to do solo reading on design thinking than to design and iterate on typefaces or app flows alone- those exercises may be better served when discussed in a larger group than created in a vacuum. You can find classes at specialized schools like Tradecraft and General Assembly, or check out continuing education classes and workshops offered at your local college. The latter is often a better bang for your buck, but do your research and see whats best for you. 6. Get to Know PeopleTo be a good designer, you have to understand people. Get to know them and try to feel their pain points. What are people motivated by? How do they make decisions? What delights them and frustrates them? What experience are you creating for them, and how will that make them feel? No matter which part of the design process youre interested in, all road s lead to designing an experience for people, so make a point of learning everything you can about them. Work on your listening skills and on building empathy for others to really get at the core of what people are feeling in different experiences. Listen to those around you and try to feel what theyre feeling and why, and think about how your designs might impact and improve their experiences. The nice thing about empathy is you can build it any time, anywhere, so get started7. Run With a ProjectThis can be the scariest part, but the best way to learn design at this point is to just start doing it. So find a project and get going It doesnt have to be a paid gig- in fact, a side project is probably better at this stage in your design education- the important thing is that you just start working on something. Interested in visual design? Design a logo. Interaction? Prototype an app. Design things you will in six months be embarrassed to show anyone else- its OK, thats part of the pro cess Weve all been there. Start with the basics and go.8. Show Your WorkDont be afraid to start sharing your designs, even when you dont think theyre good enough. Guess what? They might not be But its important to get feedback on them, to have someone tell you about an existing pattern you didnt know existed, to join a community that will help you grow long down the road, to show and share your work, and iterate bit by bit with the help of others. Over time, youll notice that the feedback you seek changes, too. As you become more seasoned in your craft, you may seek feedback that is more detailed and specific, right down to the smallest pixel. And you may find yourself more strongly debating (or even discrediting) feedback from others. Thats great It means that you are transitioning into a being a designer with informed opinions, confident in your talents and understanding of what makes a design successful. If you feel strongly enough to defend your own designs, youre likely at the point where you can help others in their design process, too. Repay the favor and give feedback to other designers, just like they did for you. The feedback cycle never ends, no matter how senior a designer you become. How to Write a Music Press Release

How to Write a Music Press ReleaseHow to Write a Music Press ReleaseThe music is ready for its public debut - now you just need to know how to write a press release. When you write a music press release, you need to get in and get out - in other words you have to communicate all of the necessary information in a clear and engaging manner without overstaying your welcome with the reader. Sure, it may sound like a tall order, but once you get the hang of it, writing press releases will become a breeze. Lets begin. Identify What Youre Promoting Focus is your friend when it comes to press releases, and it helps to have a clear goal in mind. What do you want the people reading your press release to do? Do you want them to write about your new release, your upcoming shows, your Battle of the Bands win...you get the picture? Choose a very specific promotion goal to build your press release around. Beware of being vague. Sure, essentially what you are always trying to promote is yourself - you want to get the word out about what youre doing now, so people will be interested in what youre doing in the future. However, even megastars dont JUST promote themselves. They are the subject of profiles and interviews when they have new projects coming out - and those new projects are the focal point. In other words, sending out a hey, I just started a band press release isnt going to be very useful. Youre looking for a hey, I am playing five shows at these venues in support of my recent album press release. Find Your Hook And you thought you were done narrowing your message. Not quite yet. Once you know what youre promoting, look for the hook that makes your project a good story. So, youre releasing an album. Thats excellent - but so are many, many, many other people. Why is your release (or tour or what have you) the one that should get the press, love? If youre thinking, hmmm, well, Ive got nothing - youre wrong. Youve just got to find it. Did someone on the album pl ay on another release of note? What about the producer? Did you raise money to fund the release by mowing lawns? Did you write all the songs while training for the Iditarod? Did you quit a job at the IMF to record the album? Find your story, so you can then present it as a story worth telling. Write Your Intro Paragraph Much like the first paragraph of a news story, the first paragraph of your press release should cover the whos, whats, wheres, hows and ?maybe whys of whatever youre promoting. Look at it like this - you want someone who decides not to read past the first paragraph to still know the basic information they need to know about your project. Of course, your first paragraph should also give someone a reason to WANT to keep reading, but even if they dont, they should still walk away from this intro knowing who you are and what you are promoting. Keep it short and sweet. Go for a few punchy sentences. Write Your Second Paragraph It is where the meat comes in. In you r second paragraph, add some color to your project. Obviously, what you include in this paragraph depends very much on what youre promoting, but for instance, describe the music - comparisons are always a little tricky, but a few comparisons to other artists give the reader at least a frame of reference. Highlight the reason why your story is unique. List your tour dates. Use this paragraph to give information that a member of the media could use to tell your story. In other words, your first paragraph tells them akrobat X is doing Y. The second paragraph might give them Artist X is doing Y because of Z. Paragraph two will be longer than your intro, but remember to keep it tight and on point. Write Your Closing The final paragraph is the easiest part of your press release to write. Tell the reader how they can get more information and promotional copies (if applicable). That means you should include the email address and phone number of the person in charge of handling press in quiries. Also, include links to the website and the social networking platform used most often by the artist (if applicable). Thats it Easy, huh? Keep It Short If at all possible - and in 99.99999% of cases, it IS possible - your press release should not exceed one page. If you seem to be going over while youre writing it, dont sweat it. Just keep writing until you get out all of the information in your head. Then, go back and start cutting. Opt for Telling It Straight Creativity in press releases is to be applauded. However, remember that a press release is essentially a sales pitch. Not only can trying to be too cutesy come off as cheesy to the max but getting caught up in the creative can sometimes obscure your message. If you have to choose between going all Kafka and going all news copy, go for the news copy. Be sure your main points are crystal clear before throwing in those obscure references and the like. Dig Hard for Your Angle If you had any idea how many peopl e write about entertaining their parents by singing into a brush when they were kids in their press releases, you would be shocked. Spend some time thinking about what makes you unique. After all, youre competing for coverage with other musicians. Most of them love music, too, and most of them have a long history of loving music. Loving music is a beautiful thing, but it is not what sets you unbekannt from the other musicians promoting projects. Instead, look for interesting things about the recording process, your work history, your tour plans and so on.

6 Qualities of Wildly Successful People

6 Qualities of Wildly Successful People 6 Qualities of Wildly Successful People Adapted fromThe Success Mastery Academyby Brian TracyDo you want to be successful? You can be as long as you learn to think the way the most successful people think and adopt their habits. But what makes someone a master achiever? Here are six characteristics1. They Are AmbitiousThey believe they are capable of being the best. They see themselves as having thecapacity tobe really good at what they do.This was a really big thought for me. It held me back for many years. When I saw people who were doing better than I was, I naturally assumed they were better than I was. And if they were better than I was, then I must be a worse than them. So that would mean they were superior and I was inferior.Thats a big harte nuss in our societyWe have feelings of inferiority, and behauptung feelings of inferiority are often translated into feelings of undeservedness. The word deserve comes from two Latin words meaning from service. You deserve 100 percent of everything you make and enjoy as long as you get it from serving other people. If you serve better, serve more, serve at a higher level, serve more enthusiastically, and serve at a higher quality, then youll have a wonderful income and youll deserve every penny of it.You just must see yourself capable of being the best.2. They Are CourageousSuccessful people work to confront the fears that hold most people back. The two biggest enemies to our success are fear and doubt. When you do something repeatedly, you develop a habit. Make a habit throughout your life of doing the things that scare you. If you do the thing you fear, the death of fear is certain. So face your fears. The ability to confront your fears is the mark of the superior person. If you have high ambition and you decide to be at the top, and you can confront your fears and do the things that are holding you back, those two things alone will make you a great success.3. They Are Commit tedThe top people in every field are completely committed. They believe in themselves they believe in their companies they believe in their products and services they believe in their customers. They have an intense belief. We know that there is a one-to-one relationship between the depth of your belief and what happens in your reality. If you absolutely believe in the rightness and the goodness of what youre doing, you become like a catalyst. You create what is called a transfer like an electrical transfer of enthusiasm.People who are not committed to what they do lead very empty lives. Caring is a critical element in life. All men and women who enjoy great lives care about what they do. They have passion about what they do. They love what they do.4. They Are PreparedSuccessful people review every detail in advance. They do things that the average person is not willing to do. They make sacrifices the average person is not willing to make. The differencethese sacrifices makeis extra ordinary. Before you go into a meeting, do your homework. Before you give a speech, research the information and practice your talking points. Dive in deep to review every detail of every situation before you take it on.Successful people are more concerned about pleasing results than they are about pleasing methods. There is nothing more complimentary to your team, your client, or your audience than the feeling that you have thoughtfully prepared.5. They Are Continuous LearnersHigh achievers recognize that if theyre not continually getting better, theyre getting worse. They read, they listen to CDs, and they take additional training. The professional never stops learning.6. They Are ResponsibleThe top people in our society have attitudes of self-employment. Thats essential, because 100 percent of us are self-employed We are presidents of our own personal services corporations. You work for yourself, and the biggest mistake you can ever make is thinkingyouwork for anyone else. The per son who signs your paycheck may change, your job may change, but you are always the same. Youare the one constant. The fact of the matter is that this is not optional it is mandatory. Youre the president of your own career, your own life, your own finances, your own body, your own family, your own health. You are totally responsible. We have to be responsible. No one will ever do it for us. Its the most liberating and exhilarating thought of all, to realize that youre the president of your own life.A version of this article originally appeared on SUCCESS.com.Brian Tracy is a top-selling author of more than 45 books, as well as writer and producer of audio and video learning programs, including the best-selling The Psychology of Achievement.

How to Write a Really Great Web Designer Resume

How to Write a Really Great Web Designer Resume How to Write a Really Great Web Designer Resume Writing a web designer resume can be a real challenge. How do you communicate your creativity and knowledge of web strategy using just words? The good news is that it̢۪s perfectly possible. I̢۪ve been writing resumes for web designers and other creative professionals for many years now, and I̢۪d like to share some of my top tips with you. Implement these changes to your resume and I promise youll see improved results. 1) Web Designer Rule #1: Focus on results. As a creative professional, you might not naturally have a passion for results. You might be more interested in user experience, or typography, or graphics all of which are of course vital to your work. But ignoring results is a fatal mistake. The ultimate purpose of your work is to generate results, whether that be increased user engagement, higher e-commerce sales, or improved brand awareness. And the great thing about your job is that it̢۪s possible to measure the impact of almost everything you do. If you dont know the results of the work youve done, do your best to find out. Talk to your employer or your clients and explain that youre interested in understanding the impact of your designs. Ask if theyd mind sharing. And make a note any time someone tells you a positive statistic. Each result you can describe wil strengthen your resume. 2) Web Designer Resume Rule #2: Write a powerful summary. The first half of the first page is the most important part of your resume. Its here that the recruiter will make his or her initial snap decision and you want it to be in your favour. This introduction needs to convey two things 1) that your designs get results and 2) how you do it. For example, if your great strength is branding, you might start with a headline that reads Experienced web designer who has driven sales increases of 200% and more through the creation of compelling online brands that truly resonate with the target audience. Heres much more on how to write an effective resume summary. 3) Web Designer Rule #3: Link to an online portfolio. While your resume is important, its your work that will really sell you and employers expect to be able to review it easily and quickly. Thats why an online portfolio is vital. Use a service like Behance if you dont have your own website and make sure that the designs you include are your very best. And make sure that the link to your portfolio is easy to find perhaps by using formatting to highlight it on the resume (see an example here). 4) Web Designer Rule #4: Make sure your resume looks nice. As a designer, its vital that your resume shows that you have good taste and style. It doesn̢۪t need to be fancy in fact I think designers can often get too creative with their resumes to the detriment of their sales message. But it does need to show that you know how to lay out a page well. See our resume samples for ideas. 5) Web Designer Rule #5: Include keywords. Because of the nature of your work, its likely that your resume will be screened for technical and design skills before a human ever sees it. Make sure that you list all the software you know, all the web programs you use, all the design skills you have. This way, your resume is more likely to make it through to a real human, where all the rest of the great work youve done will shine through. I hope these tips have helped you see how you can revamp your resume. For more detailed assistance, be sure to check out our free resume writing course. Over 2 weeks, youll receive an email a day, each one detailing key success strategies for making your resume really stand out. Good luck!

Survey finds two thirds of business owners are depressed

Survey finds two thirds of business owners are depressed Survey finds two thirds of business owners are depressed Affecting roughly 300 million people of all ages worldwide, depression is one of the leading contributors to the global burden of disease. Less than half of this statistic is currently receiving treatment for the pervasive condition, and according to the World Health Organization, about one million people commit suicide per year. The symptoms are often hard to identify, and even harder to mitigate, as both often belong to a myriad of factors. Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more! Those that fall victim to bouts or episodes are equally at risk of exacerbating their disorder due to daily anxieties; work-related stress is one of the more commonly cited reactors. A survey recently conducted by The Anxiety and Depression Association of America reports that 56% of employees feel that their struggle with mental health actively interferes with their workplace performance, with an additio nal 51% saying the condition adversely impacted relationships with their peers.  As far as the stressors are concerned, deadlines were found to be the biggest culprit with 55% of respondents occasioning this in particular, though interpersonal relationships and staff management followed close behind with 53% and 50% respectively. Limited awarenessThere are unique pressures that accompany an office setting. Isolation is one of the key characteristics of depression. Whether fathered by a fear of social failure, or an impulse to engage in self-destructive behavior, sufferers often have a difficult time adjusting to work cultures that survive on collaboration. The introverted, slightly askew cubicle dweller illuminates the more traditional scenario, but according to a massive new survey entrepreneurs, the “drivers of our economy”, face distinct mental health challenges that often go overlooked by reason of stigmas and limited awareness. The survey of nearly 500 business owners sugg ests an alarming lack of resources for victims of one of the most common illnesses in the world. “We want this report to start an open conversation and shift the popular view of entrepreneurs from ‘tireless innovator’ or ‘lone visionary’ to one that allows them to show their vulnerability and ask for help when needed,” explains  Fardous Hosseiny, interim National CEO and National Director, Research and Public Policy at The Canadian Mental Health Association, which conducted the recent report titled Going it Alone: The Mental health and well-being of Canada’s entrepreneurs. “There needs to be more discussion about entrepreneur mental health and more attention paid to it by entrepreneur networks and organizations,” Hosseiny continued. The exhaustive paper revealed that as many as two-thirds of entrepreneurs feel depressed at least once a week. Not unlike the respondents cited just above from The Anxiety and Depression Association of America survey, 46% of this same pool of business owners said that their depression frequently hindered their ability to work. Female entrepreneurs and business owners that were in the early stages of their venture were found to be two of the more depressed groups of all the participants surveyed. It’s important to remember that mental illness only recently entered our consciousness as a disease to be taken seriously.  Because of this, the instruments meant to treat this stuff are still fairly blunt. Awareness is our best course presently.Michael Denham is the President and CEO at The BDC,which is the organization dedicated to entrepreneurs that supported the researchers of the new study. Denham believes that the new survey will go along way in supplying business owners with the tools and support they need to tackle their mental health struggles while manning the vertiginous landscape of entrepreneurship. Denham explains to BIospace, “We want to make sure mental health is included in discussions about entrepren eurship in Canada. The CMHA study has enabled us to take the pulse of entrepreneurs’ well-being and now we are better positioned to take helpful action.”

8 ways to feel real strength ... even when youre feeling anything but strong

8 ways to feel real strength ... even when you're feeling anything but strong 8 ways to feel real strength ... even when you're feeling anything but strong Many situations look stronger from the outside than they actually feel on the inside. What we see is not what we always get. Our friends might smile and say it’s all fine when they’re blowing up inside. Our family members might be having a hard day. Our colleagues could have an entire world of hardship happening that we know nothing of.It might look strong to us. But it probably doesn’t feel strong to them.Strength, isn’t about having it all together. Strength doesn’t come from who can lift the most. Hustle the most. Or walk through fire the quickest. Rather, strength is really a sign of softness. Can you stay open, and gentle and loving, and not let life shut you down? Can you stay warm, and hopeful, and resilient, even people tell you to do otherwise? Can you flow, and be still, and work with ease, as a way to your desired outcome? There is more strength in softness than hardening up could ever provide. So the question lingers…what does it take to stay soft? Which is whe re all the real strength is.To stay soft, you choose curiosity. Instead of being right. To stay soft, you choose love. Even when you’re hurting. To stay soft, you slow down sometimes. Even when slow feels scary. To stay soft, you let yourself hope. And believe. Even when logic feel safer. To stay soft, you laugh easy. And often. To stay soft, you open yourself to emotion. Instead of building every one of the walls to keep it all out.To stay soft, you do hard things gently. The hard conversations. The hard choices. The hard realizations. Be gentle. To stay soft, you believe more than you criticize. You believe in yourself. You believe in others.Staying soft isn’t the easy way. It requires vulnerability. It will demand that you open to life. It asks that you risk being hurt, because there will be no armor to keep it all out. But in it’s place you’ll have strength. Real strength. And that will make life far more colorful and wonderful and deeply powerful than hardening up ever could. This article was originally published on MaxieMcCoy.

Engineering and Business A Combination for Success

Engineering and Business A Combination for Success Engineering and Business A Combination for Success Before becoming a professor at the University of Notre Dame, engineer Bob Dunn enjoyed a successful 33-year business career. During this time he noticed that, for the most part, the most successful employees possessed a good understanding of basic business principles and corporate dynamicssomething he felt engineering students should learn at the university level. The goal is to make engineers highly effective in the corporate world, says Dunn, now managing director for ND's Center for Nano Science and Technology. This corresponds closely with the concept of 'T-shaped' people. A T-shaped person is one who has deep knowledge within one discipline (engineering, the vertical bar) and broad knowledge about how it interacts with other disciplines (business, the horizontal bar). Today's recruiters are seeking engineers with these types of skills and many universities are starting to respond with academic programs that integrate business and science. Dunn started one of the first programs in 2001 when he helped develop the Integrated Engineering and Business Program at UND. The program includes two semester-long courses: Integrated Engineering Business Fundamentals and Advanced Integrated Engineering Business Concepts. Internet-Based Simulation The fundamentals course provides a sound understanding of the business processes that engineering graduates will encounter, either directly or indirectly, in their careers, says Dunn. It covers corporate financial reporting, business plans, development processes, project management, supply chains, globalization, outsourcing, emotional intelligence, effective presentations, management processes, and quality concepts. The advanced course further develops the understanding of corporations as integrated operations and continues the development of personal skills the students will need in the workplace. The highlight of the program is an exercise in which teams of students compete using an Internet-based business simulation, Capstone Management Simulation. The teams manage a simulated, $100-million sensor business that supplies five different products in five different markets. They must make marketing, development, pricing, manufacturing, forecasting, human resource, financing, and quality decisions, as well as generate full annual reports. Each market has different product selection criteria based on price, age of product, reliability, and product performance. Students compete for revenues, market share, and profits. The simulation is introduced early in the semester with two practice rounds followed by an eight-week competitive series. Using this simulation, the students learn the interaction of all corporate functions and the trade-offs necessary for a company to gain market share and make profits. Integrated Education More universities are adding integrated engineering-business courses to their engineering programs to provide these skill sets. For example, Lehigh University has a four-year honors program in Integrated Business and Engineering (IBE) that prepares students for leadership roles in industrial research and development, entrepreneurial initiatives, management consulting, high-tech ventures, innovative technology, and finance services. Key features include: students must acquire proficiency in at least one foreign language and are encouraged to study abroad mandatory summer industrial internship a comprehensive senior capstone design project focused on entrepreneurship that incorporates marketing, strategic planning, and competitive analysis, along with product, process, and system design issues. This is a rigorous honors program suited for the brightest high-school graduates from this country and abroad, says Robert Storer, professor of industrial and manufacturing systems engineering and co-director of the IBE program. Students will achieve in four years what most students in other programs might accomplish in five years or more, and they will graduate with a strong mix of business, international, and technical skills. Dunn indicates that students who complete a comprehensive engineering-business program will have a distinct advantage in the job market. Their business skills will give them a fast start in industryfor example, they will be able to read a company annual report and analyze its financial health and sources of cash and have increased confidence when interacting with executives. They will also have a working knowledge of contemporary techniques in product development, supply chain and quality, outsourcing, and e-business. Many companies, including IBM, are anxious to recruit T-shaped engineering students, expecting them to solve problems in their technical fields within the context of the entire organization, says Dunn. These students will be in high demand when they graduate and apply for jobs. Mark Crawford is an independent writer. Many companies, including IBM, are anxious to recruit T-shaped engineering students, expecting them to solve problems in their technical fields within the context of the entire organization.Prof. Bob Dunn, University of Notre Dame

Tips and Advice for Writing a Great Cover Letter

Tips and Advice for Writing a Great Cover Letter Tips and Advice for Writing a Great Cover Letter Your resume is, of course, extremely important when youre applying for a job, but  cover letters  are just as key and should not be an afterthought.   Every cover letter you write should be customized for the  specific job  you  are  seeking. It must be clearly written and concise, as well as free from any typos, grammatical errors, or misspelled names. Remember, people often read your cover letter before your resume. Its your opportunity to make a good first impression and also show why you are a  great candidate for a job. Here are tips and suggestions for  your  cover  letter  that will help you stand out from the crowd and get you one step closer to a job offer. Send a Customized Cover Letter Each Time Your cover letter may make the difference between obtaining a job interview and having your  resume  ignored. Your cover letter is your first opportunity to create a relationship  with the  person  who is doing the hiring. Even if an employer doesnt request a cover letter, its helpful to send one. Target Your Cover Letter Take a good look at the job posting and make a list of the criteria the employer is looking for. Then list the skills and experience you have that correlates  to what the employer is  seeking. This is not cheating. Its simply being smart enough to target your skills to the job. Be sure to address  how your skills match the job requirements. Remember, a successful cover letter shows a potential employer how youll benefit the company. Why you want the job and why its a good fit for you are less important considerations for hiring managers. See more on  creating a targeted cover letter. Dont Rehash Your Resume Your cover letter should complement, not duplicate, your  resume. It should expand upon your resume and highlight your skills and experience and how they relate  to the job youre applying for. Format Your Letter Properly Your formatting will be slightly different if youre sending your letter through the mail, uploading it to an application portal, or sending it via email. Heres more information on how to  format a cover letter. All cover letters are structured into three basic sections. In the first paragraph, youll say why youre writing. Mention the specific job title and where you saw the posting. In the middle section, youll establish what makes you a good candidate, referencing relevant experience and skills. Finally, in the third section of a cover letter, youll thank the letter recipient for reading. You can also share details on how youll follow up. Write Simply and Clearly Write  a  short,  targeted  letter  by  getting  right to the point. No one has time for an epic novel, so keep your cover  letter to one page. Also, make sure each paragraph has no more than three or four sentences. If you want, you can opt to use bullet points to break up chunks of text. Just make sure they do not duplicate your resume.   Avoid cliches in your cover  letter,  and while  it is a formal piece of correspondence, it  shouldnt  sound  stilted, stiffor unnatural.   Personalize Your Letter If you can,  address your cover letter  to the individual who is doing the hiring. If necessary, conduct some online research to find out who the hiring manager is. SearchLinkedIn or find  the Contact  or  About  Us  section  of  a  companys website. You  could  try calling the company to find out. This  is not being pushy. The hiring manager will respect you for taking the initiative. Use Email for Cover Letters When you email a cover letter, make sure your letter is short. Include the copy in the body of the email message. Dont send a  cover letter as an attachment  unless the employer specifically requests it  in  that  format. Keep copies  of all your cover letters so you trackwhat you sent to whom. That way, if you get a request for an interview, you can look back at your cover letters to know what you  already mentioned.   Spell Check and Proofread Before  you  send  the  cover  letter,  ask someone to read  it  and  review  it  for  typos. Its  difficult  noticing mistakes in our own writing  because  we  are  so  close  to  it. If youre  alone  and need to proofread  your  own  work, you  can  try  a  few  techniques  to  catch  errors:  change the font  style, copythe text into another document, or read the  document  backward (bottom  to  top).   Always double-check that you have the company name, the job title and department, and your contacts name spelled correctly. These are particularly embarrassing errors. Follow these  proofreading tips for job seekers.   Cover Letter Examples Review  cover letters examples, both written and email, that are designed for a variety of job applications and employment inquiries.

Study says social media is not making teens depressed

Study says social media is not making teens depressed Study says social media is not making teens depressed The “Facebook depression panic” in adolescents and teens may be premature, according to a recent study.Social media use in teens is thought to lead to depression, according to popular understanding. However, that’s not true, according to recent longitudinal data and research published in Clinical Psychological Science, a journal of the Association for Psychological Science.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more!According to recent research, there’s no evidence that social media use predicts later symptoms of depression. However, in an interesting twist, the same research shows that depressive symptoms predicted higher social media use over time, but only among adolescent girls. The researchers posited that the girls were using social media to make themselves feel better. The study surveyed junior high school students in Canada once a year for two years. They also surveyed an nually undergraduates over a time period of six years. Participants answered questions about depression, how much time daily they spent on social media, looking at screens, and non-screen activities.Social media was created for many purposes, researchers say, and like anything, its outcomes are complicated.“There may be different groups of people who use social media for different reasons,” said lead author Taylor Heffer of Brock University, in a release. “For example, there may be a group of people who use social media to make social comparisons or turn to it when they are feeling down, while another group of people may use it for more positive reasons, such as keeping in contact with friends,”

How to stay productive during a blizzard

How to stay productive during a blizzard How to stay productive during a blizzard Chances are, if you’re in the Northeast, you already know that a huge snowstorm is shutting everything down. Winter storm Stella, as it’s known, is sweeping through the region with up to 18 inches of snow  and New York State, at least, is under a state of emergency. So if you’re working from home - preferably in your pajamas- during the storm, you might just be tempted to settle in, make some tea, and log off your email while conveniently “forgetting” to answer messages. Here’s some advice: don’t.Even if your kids bound into the room during your video conference call, or they want you to join them outside to build a snowman, it is possible to cross a lot off your work to-do list when you’re snowed in during the work week. Here’s how.Productivity increases in bad weatherIf you think all you’ll want to do is go outside instead of working during a blizzard, don’t fret: scientific evidence suggests that may not be the case.A 2014 study published in the Journal of Ap plied Psychology found that bad weather makes us more focused: “…the positive effects of bad weather on worker productivity stem from the likelihood that people may be cognitively distracted by the attractive outdoor options available to them on good weather days. Consequently, workers will be less distracted and more focused on bad weather days, when such outdoor options do not exist, and therefore will perform their tasks more effectively.”The study was about sunny and rainy days - but even if you love the snow more than a sunny day, you might not be as distracted  by the falling flakes as you think. How your employer chooses to handle time off in the snow is up to them, but there is dialogue surrounding what’s allowed, according to U.S. News and World Report. You can make a case to stay home if it’s too dangerous to commute.Stay in hourly communicationThis is basic but it’s surprising how often it breaks down: Make sure you’re able to contact your work team if neces sary, with strong wi-fi and working phone lines.Check in with your boss and coworkers more often than you would in the office to make sure you have a clear, defined sense of what’s due. When you can’t see your colleagues, you may miss a lot of the usual handoffs.Even better, set up a video conference call for a quick check-in early so that the day doesn’t derail.  You don’t need fancy video-conferencing software on your laptop at home; Skype or Google Hangouts get everyone on the same page.Set ground rules against distractionsWorking from home during a snow day is just as fraught with potential time-wasters as being in the office: colleagues may not interrupt you, but you have the internet, the kitchen and unfettered access to Netflix. The key: setting boundaries on what is work time and what is break time or leisure time. One remote business owner told The Guardian how she set up her day; it may work for you even if you work for someone else.“In the beginning I had to be r eally blunt and say ‘This is my working day. I’m happy to chat with you after six, but between nine and six I’m at work,'” Karen said.  Work in the right spaceAt home, our work space is often not as defined as it is in the office. Friends of ours have used kitchen counters, dining tables, couches and even have worked from bed.Define a space that means only “work” when you see it. It can be small, but it should have all the tools you need and it should be clear and free of books, toys, stray video-game controllers and other random distractions.“You have to have an organized space in your home so that you can work in that space with limited distractions,” Paul McDonald, senior executive director of Robert Half International  told Glassdoor.  You may be inspired by some aspects of what scientific research suggests would be the ideal office: rounded furniture and lots of plants. You can also peruse Pinterest for home-office ideas - but beware, it can be addictive, and do wnright dangerous if it inspires you to do some online furniture shopping.Make time to playThe great part about working from home: no commute, which gives you more time.Use that time to make sure you take breaks, just as you should at the office.Breaks are the scientifically-backed way to work better: they make you more focused, more creative, and even improve your brain’s ability to retain information. So take a breather every hour. And once you’ve taken care of all your work responsibilities,  shut off your work laptop and get back to what you actually want to be doing.Snow days can be opportunities for creating at home what the Danish call hygge: cozy. If anyone has experience with snow days, it’s the Danes.“Danes created hygge because they were trying to survive boredom, cold, dark and sameness and the undefinable feeling of hygge was a way for them to find moments to celebrate or acknowledge and to break up the day, months or years,” Hygge House blogger Alex Beauchamp writes. What that means for you: make time for cozy and fun activities. Bake those cookies, watch those movies and finally head outside. You might still be able to build that snowman, and show up to work refreshed the next day.

5 Reputation-Ruining Phrases You Should Never Let Your Boss Hear You Say

5 Reputation-Ruining Phrases You Should Never Let Your Boss Hear You Say 5 Reputation-Ruining Phrases You Should Never Let Your Boss Hear You Say If you want to get ahead at work, there are certain things you should steer clear of saying in the office. Even if what you’re saying is true (and everyone knows it!). Every time you want to lash out at an irritating manager or co-worker, take a breath and watch your words. Finding productive ways to work through your frustrations will put you that much closer to landing that promotion. Sometimes it’s as easy as walking away from the situation and taking a deep breath, other times it’s as hard as confronting the person professionally. (And sometimes it’s as fun as taking a coloring break.) However, the answer is never to let your boss overhear you say these five things in your moments of frustration: 1. “That’s Not my Job” Here’s the thing about your company- it’s (hopefully) always growing, expanding, and revising its goals as needed. And that means that you’re going to be asked to take on assignments that fall outside of your exact job description. Especially if you’re competent and able to handle everything that’s currently on your plate. If you want to be seen as a team player (and someone who cares about his or her own career growth), you need to take on new responsibilities- even if it’s not entirely in your wheelhouse. Hey, you may learn a new skill and even find that you enjoy something you never thought you would. However, if you’re literally unable to do the assigned task (because it’s accounting-based and you’re a marketing associate), you’re allowed to turn it down. The key here is to do it in a way that reminds your boss that it’s not your job for a reason (i.e., you genuinely don’t know how to balance the books), rather than simply whining. Instead Say “I’m more than willing to take on extra responsibilities, but I’m afraid that number-crunching is not my strong suit, and I don’t want to let you down. Is there another assignment you need help with? Or can I help you find another solution?” It’s OK to be honest with your manager when it comes to this. In fact, he or she will probably appreciate it because, in the long run, you’re saving everyone a lot of wasted time and stress. The key here is for your message to be “I want what’s best for the team,” more than, “I’m not staying a minute past 6 PM tonight.” 2. “He’s Such a Jerk/Tool/Tyrant” Fill in the blanks. We all have moments at work when we’re so incredibly annoyed at our boss, colleague, or client that we’re tempted to whine about the situation to anyone who will listen. Here’s the rub: Complaining in the workplace is not only unprofessional, but it’s also dangerous and bad PR for yourself. You may think you can trust that cubicle mate with whom you eat lunch every day, but she may also think she can trust her friend in marketing not to repeat this gossip to anyone else. And before you know it, your venting confession’s going around the office like a game of telephone. By the time it gets back to that alleged tyrant, it’s escalated into something far worse than what you said. Instead Say “I really want to work together/for you, but when you [yell at me/don’t respond to me/criticize me in front of the team], it makes me feel demoralized and unvalued. What can I do to facilitate a more open line of communication?” Rather than griping about your concerns behind the perpetrators’ backs, set up a meeting with the person in question to address the issues in a professional, clear, mature way. When you’ve had a bad day or someone has rubbed you the wrong way one time too many times, take a deep breath, try to calm down, and then have an honest conversation. If you really need to rant, do it later to someone who has nothing to do with your job. 3. [Grimace.] So much of communication comes through not what we say, but rather our tone, body language, and delivery. I’ve all seen it: people rolling their eyes, making faces behind their boss’ back in a meeting when they hear something they don’t like, and sighing loudly when asked to do a lame assignment. Though you may think no one notices, it’s simply bad form, and there’s a pretty good chance that someone does. Instead Do [Poker face.] Don’t make your dissatisfaction obvious to others. When a person is tense, nervous, angry, defensive, or disingenuous, those feelings are often broadcast to other people in the room- even if that person doesn’t know it. This sounds silly, but you can practice this “nonchalant” face in your mirror at home. Or, alternatively, you can take selfies and find out if your face reflects “I’m open and listening to what you’re saying” as much as you think it does. 4. “I Guess I’ll Just Stay Late- Again” People aren’t mind readers, so you need to learn to say what you mean. Passive aggressively sighing and muttering to your boss that you have so much work to do isn’t going to get you anywhere. Instead Say “I appreciate the additional responsibility you’ve given me, but I’m trying to figure out how to get everything done within relatively normal working hours. Though I don’t mind staying late on occasion, it would help me to hear from you what projects take priority so I can tackle those first.” Approaching it this way helps you to get clear direction from your supervisor- versus toiling away every night until you get bitter or burned out. Maybe your supervisor does know how many hours you’re putting in, but maybe he or she doesn’t and will be concerned to learn that you’re working until 9 PM every night. You won’t know until you address it like an adult. 5. “I Tried That Once and it Didn’t Work” In her best-selling book, Basic Black: The Essential Guide to Getting Ahead at Work (and in Life), former Hearst Magazines President Cathie Black tells of her frustration when she first arrived at the media company and repeatedly heard this refrain, which screams of a defeatist attitude. Instead Say “We’ve actually tried that in the past and it did not succeed. However, if we change variable X or variable Y, it might lead to better results. If it doesn’t work this time, let’s come up with another plan altogether.” If you take another stab at it or explore another avenue, you may find that you’ll be successful the second time around. Or, as Black suggests in her book, ask yourself, “Why didn’t the idea work originally? What was the fallout, and what did we learn?” By remaining goal-oriented and opening yourself up to alternative routes to success, you’ll be a lot more fruitful. Ultimately, it’s about maintaining a positive attitude- at least outwardly- if you’re aiming to win extra points with your boss and co-workers. Putting on a brave face, being a team player, and knowing what you should and shouldn’t say in front of your boss will help you develop a good reputation at work.
